Mr. Lancia's Summer Vacation Reading Club
Be sure to take part in Mr. Lancia's Summer Reading Club this year! Read for 20 minutes a day, record the titles and number of pages, ask a parent to sign your log, and bring it back to school on the first day of school. GET READING!!
June Author of the Month - Kate diCamillo
Kate DiCamillo is the author of the hilarious series of books starring Mercy Watson, including MERCY WATSON GOES FOR A RIDE where Mercy ends up driving a car. She is also the author of THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX, which won the Newbery Medal; BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, which received a Newbery Honor; THE TIGER RISING, a National Book Award Finalist; and THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE, winner of a BOSTON GLOBE-HORN BOOK Award. Her favorite books when she was a child were PINOCCHIO and WINNIE THE POOH.
February Author of the Month - Cornelia Funke
CORNELIA FUNKE is a phenomenal author. She has written a number of excellent books for young people, mostly adventures and fantasies that involve memorable characters and fantistic situations. She originally wrote and published books in German. Today, her books are popular around the world. Inkspell was recently made into a movie. Some of her books are: Dragon Rider, Ghost Hunters Series, Igraine the Brave, Inkdeath, Inkheart, Inkspell, Pirate Girl, The Thief Lord, and When Santa Fell to Earth. Hints for Choosing Good Books
- Examine the covers and read the blurb on the back
- Look at the next book in a series
- Browse through authors and topics you enjoy
- Ask a friend for a suggestion
What To Do When You're Stuck on a Word
- Read around the word, read to the period, then go back.
- Ask yourself: "What would make sense?"
- Look at the pictures if there are any.
- Stretch out the word for the sounds. Do any parts of the word help you?
- Check the first sound in the word.
